..PLAQUE? Plaque is a sticky layer of germs that builds up on the surface of the tooth. It contains millions of bacteria, some of which produce acids, which attack the tooth. This causes tooth decay. see The War with Decay
..DECAY? Decay is the process during which the tooth begins to be destroyed, by acid. Acid combines with the sugars in food to attack the enamel. Eventually the enamel dissolves and a small hole appears. The decay then goes through the enamel and reaches the dentine layer of the tooth. Decay can then reach the pulp underneath. see The War with Decay
Certain bacteria in plaque produce toxins, which cause inflammation of the gums. Gum disease develops slowly and in the early stages is known as gingivitis. How do you know if you might have gum disease? The earliest signs are gums that bleed when they are brushed. Sometimes they are reddened and sore. If the plaque is not removed regularly it will build up and harden at the gum line and form calculus or tartar. Your dentist or hygienist should remove Tartar. If you allow the tartar and plaque to continue to build up it will attack the bones and fibres that support the teeth. Eventually the tooth may become loose and fall out. Although young people can suffer from gum disease it tends to be a problem for older people. It is best to begin good brushing and flossing habits when you are young so that you can prevent gum disease.
