Teeth tell us About the Creatures they Belong to..........

Teeth can tell us a lot about the life of animals, particularly what foods the animals eat. There are basically three types of animals;

Carnivores

Carnivores are animals who eat only meat. These flesh eating animals some times do not need to eat for 2 or three days after a meal. Examples of carnivores include Lions and Tigers, these animals are known as predators. That means they hunt other animals and kill them for food.

Lions and other big cats have short strong skulls with powerful jaws. They have spear like canine teeth, which pierce and rip their victim's flesh. The large molar teeth tear flesh and gristle as the jaws open and close. Lions usually eat large prey such as antelopes and zebras. One Giraffe is often enough to feed a whole pride of Lions.

Herbivores

Herbivores are animals who are vegetarians, they eat only plants. Vegetarians often have to eat vast amounts of plants to get enough nutrition, because plants are easily digestible. Examples of vegetarian animals are elephants, cows, rabbits, and sheep. These animals spend most of their days grazing and eating.

Beavers are rodents, a group of animals that include rats, mice, and squirrels. Like other rodents beavers have long sharp front teeth for gnawing at plants and trees. They use their teeth like chisels to bite through branches. Their food varies according to the season. In autumn they feed on bark and soft wood. In spring and summer beavers feed on grass, leaves, and water plants.

Omnivores

These animals have a mixed diet, and eat both meat and plants. An obvious example is a human being-us!

As we have found out, humans have a mixed dentition that means their teeth include canines, incisors and molars. This gives us a clue about the foods we are designed to eat .We are omnivores!
